Clean your air conditioning unit and/or get it inspected. Remove any leaves from inside or around the unit and dust, vacuum or spray the condenser fins to get off remaining dirt and debris. After you do that, replace the filter inside the house.   learn more.

Below are the questions our customers frequently ask. When answering these questions, we have described possible solutions to the problems our customers have told us about.
Why is it cold in our house in winter?

A house could be cold during winter, because:
  • The heating system is not efficient and can’t provide enough heat for the whole house to be warm.
  • There might be air leakages that let in the cold air from outside.
  • The attic insulation is not adequate and can not stop the heat loss by conduction.
Imagine you are driving your car on a very hot summer day, your AC is on full power and the sun roof is open. You will feel the cold air coming out of the air conditioner, but it will escape through the sun roof. This is what happens in the house when you don’t have enough attic insulation – you will still feel the air conditioner working, but the cold air will escape if the attic is not properly insulated.
The insulation stops the heat transfer by conduction.
In the winter the insulation keeps the warm air inside and does not let it escape through the ceiling.
The current recommended value of the attic insulation is R50 (R stands for “Resistance to heat”), though most houses have the R value ranging from R12 to R20.
To get the recommended R50 value, you will need to have 18 – 19 inches of insulation at the attic.

Why is it hot in our house in the summer?

A house could be hot during the summer, because:
  • 1. The cooling system is not efficient enough.
  • 2. There are air leakages in the house that let in the hot air from outside. It is very important to stop all the hot air from coming into the house.
  • Household equipment is producing heat during its operation.
  • 4. Inadequate insulation can not stop the heat from coming inside. As heat builds up in the attic, it is important to insulate the attic properly. Proper attic insulation will prevent the heat transfer.

How is it possible to solve the problem of losing heat in the winter? How much will it cost?
If my house is too hot in the summer, how can I solve the problem? How much will it cost?
As there are different factors that cause these problems, there are different ways to fix the problems. The costs will be different as well. That is why it is important to find out what exactly is causing the problem. Once we know that, we will consider what should be done to solve the problem.

It is recommended you have an expert visit your house to assess the current situation/house condition, describe the options available to solve the problem and give you an estimate.

Cost of the attic insulation depends on the amount of work and materials required to do the job.
Why is my air conditioner working non-stop?
The air conditioner might work continuously, because:
  • The air conditioner unit is not powerful enough for the house of this size, and therefore can not supply enough cold air;
  • The hot air from the outside penetrates the house and replaces the cold air
  • Cold air produced by the air conditioner is being lost in the ceiling due to the conduction of the warm air from the attic space. This is what usually happens if during the summer the upper floor is hotter, than the main floor or the basement.
Do we need more a powerful air conditioner/furnace?
More powerful air conditioner will not solve the problem, but will make you spend more money on electricity.

The right size of air conditioner will give you the comfort that you are looking for. The same applies to the furnace.

We would not think to install a powerful truck engine in our family car, just because we want to give it more power.
Why is the room above the garage too cold?
There are a few reasons:
  • The air is not being supplied properly by the existing system, though in most cases, it is not the issue.
  • The cold outside air is entering the house through the garage.
  • Insulation in the garage ceiling is not adequate, and the warm air is being lost.
The solution:
Closed Cell Spray foam in the garage ceiling will stop the heat transfer by conduction and will not allow the warm air escape, and prevent the cold air infiltration from the outside.

In addition, if the attic insulation is not adequate, the warm air is being lost through the celing.
Why is the room above the garage too hot in the summer?
There are a few reasons:
  • The air conditioning is not supplying enough of cool air, but it is not what causing the problem in most cases.
  • The inside air is escaping through the garage.
  • Insulation in the in the garage ceiling is not adequate, and the cool air is escaping through the garage ceiling.

The solution:
Closed Cell Spray foam in the garage ceiling will stop the air transfer by conduction and completely stop the air infiltration from the outside.
Will duct cleaning help to fix cold/heat problem?
Duct cleaning won’t do much to solve the problem. Duct cleaning is mostly about the indoor air quality and the efficiency of the heating and cooling system (mechanical system).

Unless some part of the vent is completely blocked, duct cleaning will not solve the problem.
Do I need to replace my doors/windows?
It is important to seal the air leakage around the windows and doors to get the maximum efficiency of the existing windows and doors. It will be wise to find out the current R factor of the existing windows and doors, and find out what the new R factor will be, if you install new ones. Also, you might want to find out what is the present R factor of the attic and consider ways to increase it to R50, which it should be once your attic is properly insulated. Consider Pay back time if you want to install new windows and doors. Call us for a home visit to find a better way to solve your cooling/heating problem. Do I need to replace my roof?
The roof is considered to be outside of the living space. The roof plays no role in heating/cooling and efficiency of the house. But if there is a water leakage in the roof, or the ventilation is not adequate, that affects functioning of the attic insulation.
Why is it hotter upstairs than downstairs in the summer?
In an average house it is usually hotter upstairs than downstairs, because:

  • The hot air trapped in the attic space is being pushed into the house, because the attic insulation is not adequate.

Adequate attic insulation (up to the recommended value of R-50), as well as proper attic ventilation using rafter vents will prevent this problem.
  • As the cold air is heavier, it travels downward in a house, which in addition to the warm air from the attic creates warmer space. All this makes the house much warmer upstairs than downstairs.
  • There could be air leakage on the top floor.
Why is it colder downstairs than upstairs in winter?
In an average house, if the attic is not insulated and ventilated properly, the cold air trapped in the attic is constantly getting into the house. The cold air from the attic is making the indoor temperature gradually drop.
How do I set the vents for proper air flow?
To provide sufficient air circulation in the attic, roof vents (that let the air in) and rafter vents (that let the air out) need to be installed properly.

Most of the houses have roof vents installed when the roof was installed. If the ventilation is not good, additional roof vents can be installed. The best time to add a roof vent is when you have your roof redone. You may also consider installing turbine vents to force the air circulation process.

You may want to check if the rafter vents, i.e. inlets for the air, are installed properly and supplying enough air. If they are not installed properly, it will negatively affect your house efficiency. You may consider installing additional rafter vents.

We can install rafter vents when installing the attic insulation.
